DECORATING IS PART OF ENTERTAINING
We are entering into the entertainment season and it takes more than "home made Chex mix" to throw a great party. I know they're still a favorite after 50 years, but it's dissapointing to get dressed and show up for a bowl of snacks. You may ask, "what does inexpensive snacks have to do with cheap decorations?'
1.They are nice starters, but a poor main event .
2.They are cute, but not that cute.
3.They usally both wind up at the same horrible mandatory party you have to attend as the highlight of the evening.
On occasions I have persons to contact me with tips and suggestions on how I can do their functions cheaper. I say if you found a cheap source and that's what you want, use it. I've had all types of suggestions, such as going to one of the big box stores to select the $3.99 pointsetta to decorate their church, but we will hold you personally responsible when they die in a week. Or my favorite is "you want to charge me how much to duplicate this bouquet out of the Martha Stewart magazine?" I've had threats of boycotts and bad mouthing "I'm going to tell everybody to use that florist that was on T.V. who did that segment on making centerpieces for less than $10.00 you're tring to gouge on the prices." I've watched a few of those segements on "holiday centerpieces for less than $10.00" and said that's ten minutes of my life I'll never get back! I'll discuss on my web site why some designs are a good ideal but they don't work .
DECORATIONS ARE AS IMPORTANT TO AN EVENT AS FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT
When I talk to clients or friends that attended a function usally the first thing they discribe is something visual about the event. Who attended and what they were wearing [the good the bad and the ugly]. Almost in the same breath they mention the decorations, only when they were clever, lavish or tied in with the event.
POORLY DONE DECORATION ARE THE SAME AS NO DECORATIONS
If the decorations were boaring or poorly done, they aren't remembered, sometimes never noticed. The money would have been better spent on a bowl of after dinner mints. If the decorations didn't make sence and stood out like Lady Gaga at a Tea Party Rally they comment on how the decorator did a bad job. Yes I have to admit I've gone to events and my public comment is "they probably gave a new company a chance to do the decorations". I'm really thinking, it must have been "Flowers by: The Little Shop Of Horrors".
GOOD DECORATING CAN BE DONE ON A BUDGET
It is possible to create beautiful decorations on a budget. I will launch a series of article at www.MyWorldClassFlowers.com on how to make a budget centerpieces and decorations. It can be done with planning and support items to tie the theme together. There are few things more embarrising and dissapointing than a poorly executed decorating job. In closing I would like to remind all who enjoy decorating tips "BEAUTIFUL IS NOT CHEAP, AND CHEAP IS NOT BEAUTIFUL!"
My background in public relations, industrial arts, commercial art and landscape design shaped my ideas on party design style. Over the past 35 years i've had the privelage of working with some of the best designers and floral companies in the country.
